Known for its giant dome, Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal represents one of the world's most significant churches dedicated to St. Joseph, drawing over 2 million worshipers every year. The massive cathedral features a votive chapel with approximately 10,000 lights and candles. Completed in 1967, this pilgrimage site displays the heart of Brother Andre, who reportedly performed various miracles and possessed healing powers. Religious visitors come to see the relic, climbing 300 wooden stairs on their knees to reach the oratory. Casual tourists can walk up the stone steps or board a shuttle bus at the base of Mount Royal. Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal reviews
The entire complex of the oratory is huge to explore. Many people come here just to walk up and down the stairs which can be a very good exercise. The building has a magnificent façade just to look.... more »
Since the Oratory was undergoing major restoration works until 2022, the main “99 Step Staircase”, through which devout Catholics used to climb on their knees, was closed. Instead, we walked up... more »
The stunning scale of Saint Joseph's Oratory is matched by its history and significance to the City of Montreal and the Catholic Church. While the myriad of escalators that whisk people up and down the many, many levels of architecture and topography of the site seem out of place, one might be thankful they replace what would be a copious, and possibly access restricting, amount of steep stairs. While the entire experience was enjoyable, I felt most moved in the Crypt and Votive (Candle) Chapel portion of the Observatory. The warmth and aroma of the burning candles embraced my senses and left me a little emotional. Definitely recommend a trip here, not only for devout Christians but, for anyone who can appreciate the period architecture and energy provided.
Must see attraction in Montreal. It's really cool about the history of this great city. I keep going here many times. Theres shuttles which take you to the top or you can climb the stairs. The chapel inside is beautiful and the view outside is great. Winter or summer this place is great for a few hours or a full day. Must visit
