Palais des Papes is the biggest Gothic palace in all of Europe, with 15,000 sq m (50,000 sq ft) of floor space. This was the residence of the sovereign pontiffs in the 14th century, and is today one of UNESCO's world heritage sites. Visit the chapels, cloister, ceremonial halls, and the Pope's private apartments, decorated with priceless frescoes. • It's not quite as grand as you might imagine. You can book ahead of time but it's not really required. Each ticket is 12 euro. You can opt for the histopad which gives more background. Otherwise...

  • This is of course a must visit place when in Avignon. The history of the Palais, home to seven popes in the 14th and 15th century, is well worth exploring. The entrance fee includes a tablet...

  • I really enjoyed the tablet showing what each room was used for, including bits on info on features around the room. The audio guides were great too. A bit pricey but I suppose worth it…. Only do it if you’re interested in Avignon’s history’s
  • Great self guided tour through the palace using a tablet they provide so that you can see and hear the history and how each of the rooms were used. You can get tickets in advance at the tourist office in Avignon to get in at a set time. Much easier than standing in 2 lines. Go early to beat the crowds.
