The art of nature is complemented with the art of humans at the Musee de Grenoble, founded by Louis-Joseph Jay in 1798. Although, Jay had to fight to have his plans approved for the 18,270 sq m ( 196,657 sq ft) building, it was eventually completed and touts an uninterrupted tour from 12th to 21st century art. There are artifacts on multiple floors, but don’t forget to visit the museum’s impressive collection of 19th- and 20th-century African artifacts located downstairs. Prettiest modern architecture in Grenoble, both outside and in. Lovely permanent collection and usually very good temporary exhibitions. The Egyptology stuff I've purposefully avoided. Don't miss the contemporary part in the basement, by the remnants of the Roman wall

Very good museum, presents a large collection of paintings dating from the 1500's until contemporary works. Most of the older paintings are from European artists. There are many works from local artists, which is a nice touch. The contemporary sculptures can be skipped without missing much, as most are nonsensical if you don't have a degree in arts. Temporary exhibits are usually small, but tend to be very well planned and are worth the visit. On the first Sunday of each month the museum is free, but if it's the last free Sunday of a temporary exhibit you can expect a long line and waiting times that approach 2 hours.
