Trip Planner: Europe / France / Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur / Bouches-du-Rhone / Les Baux de Provence / Chateau des Baux de Provence
Chateau des Baux de Provence was built in the tenth century and ruled by the lords of Baux for 500 years, during great political conflicts. This site became famous for its minstrels and troubadours, who performed every day in the honor of the king. The kings of France finally conquered the castle in the 16th century, and King Louis XIII ordered its demolition. Today, the chateau houses three life-size replicas of war machines. Tourists can watch live, daily demonstrations of enormous catapults, including the biggest trebuchet in Europe. This machine could toss a 100 kg (220 lb) rock a distance of 180 m (200 yds). Chateau des Baux de Provence Reviews
We did not pay to go into the top castle, but did get to go up as high as the clouds. It was beautiful....panoramic views! more »
This is an amazing place. We arrived before the chateau was open and shopped and walked around. There is plenty of shopping, walking around, views, and plaques with historical information. Park at.... more »
Nice place to visit. The surroundings are beautiful with a good view at the hills. It’s quite cold inside so wear a jacket. Or enjoy the cold of you are there during the summer.
A lifelong dream come true. A lot of climbing on gravel so wear the right shoes, but worth the climb. The view is incredible: it was a clear day so we could see the sun's reflection off the Mediterranean. The history is reminiscent of Roman culture. There are a few shops selling lavender, soap and ceramics. The few restaurants were packed, so eat early. One sweet thing is that the gravestones have ceramic flowers on them; they wouldn't survive a Chicago winter, but the weather is mild enough for them to do so here.
