Musee De Cluny, Paris

4.3
#11 of 183 in Museums in Paris
Formerly the Musée de Cluny, Musee De Cluny houses a variety of important medieval artifacts, particularly its tapestry collection. The most famous tapestry of the collection is the 15th-century "La Dame à la Licorne" (The Lady and the Unicorn). Other notable works include early medieval sculptures from the 7th and 8th centuries, as well as gold, ivory, antique furnishings, stained glass, and illuminated manuscripts. You'll also marvel at the building itself, from its colorful stained glass room to the Roman baths and the "Pillar of the Boatmen" carved in the 1st century CE. • Art in embroidery in the Middle Ages at the Cluny Museum (Paris - october 24, 2019 to January 20, 2020). Embroidery is a true textile art omnipresent in the daily life of the Middle Ages. Medieval embroidery is very little known today despite numerous testimonies and extensive documented archives. This exhibition presents the Western embroidery collection of the Cluny Museum (12th to 16th century) for the first time in its entires. It offers without completeness the richness and diversity especially geographical of medieval embroidery. The subject is larger, sharp and complex than I thought at first. It is also quite austere. And the certainly effective set design does not help the fun. That said, the many objects (clothes, books, paintings, tools) highlighted here explains this art efficiently. The Cluny Museum has done a real explanatory work.

  • Tiny little museum with excellent middle age tapestries of the Dame with the Unicorn. Perfect to pop in while in Latin quarter and ideal to combine with College de Bernardins  more »

  • This is an awesome little museum. It is inexpensive to visit at only 5 euros and you can see a great deal of medieval art for this. The tapestries of the lady and the unicorn are lovely and an awesome things to see when you can appreciate the detail of such an old piece of art so closely. The other medieval items are very interesting and we also found the Roman baths so cool, the architecture is amazing! One of my favorite museums in Paris!
  • It was stunning to be in a building so ancient. Being in the baths from medieval times felt surreal. They don't have a lot of artifacts, but they're so old and you can get right up close which made it an excellent place to visit. The place was cool on a hot summer day so I definitely recommend if you need to cool off. The tapestries of the Lady and Unicorn were amazing to see in person. I very much recommend this place.
