This is an inconsistent and unreliable ski school. The children are not taught well. If you go for the "classic" section, most of the instructors do not teach anything to the children, they basically tell you if your child is good or not (i.e it is a sink or swim attitude) leaving it to you to teach them. Some of the instructors are actually grumpy and don't treat the children very well. If you put your children in the "top 8" section, the instructors are superior, they spend more time focusing on the technique and are usually much nicer but it costs more money. In general, in both sections (i.e classic and top 8), the assessment of the children remains very subjective, mainly based on what the instructor thinks of your child. At the higher level, from the "bronze star" to the "gold star" the assessment becomes 50% more objective. For the "gold star" the children are assessed on a timed “giant slalom” which is objective. However, they are afterwards (the other 50% of the test) assessed for 20 seconds or so on their abilities to do what the French call the "godille" ( i.e shortswing). This assessment is undertaken by the Directeur Technique of the ESF Val d’Isere. This person is supposed to make an "objective assessment" by seeing your child ski for 20 seconds or so (even if he has never seen you child ski before) and can dismiss the performance of your child in the very objective slalom. He does not consult either with the other instructors. Many children are being failed during this very subjective test (as being assessed by only one person in a very short timeframe). This very subjective part of the test guarantees a nice revenue stream to the school as by failing the children subjectively, he is making sure that parents pay many lessons before the child gets his gold star even when the child passed the more objective giant slalom test. Just for the info, the gold star is the last in the series of medals/tests provided by the ESF, so it is very convenient to fail them many times, right at the end. Be prepared to shout to get a fair hearing.
We were in 3 different groups. In 2 of them the instructors were excellent. However my daughter was in the beginners, in an English speaking group and the instructor was a disaster. They didn't learn much and was disgusted by the ski. Just when we took her to teach her, did she start to ski and enjoy. The instructor of the English group didn't know English and it was the biggest group! Many left the group as it was so bad. On top of that, the manager of all the instructors, Maurice, didn't want to listen and help in anything.
