Le Grand Trianon, Versailles

Architectural Building · Hidden Gem · Castle
The Grand Trianon (French pronunciation: [ɡʁɑ̃ tʁijanɔ̃]) is a French Baroque style château situated in the northwestern part of the Domain of Versailles in Versailles, France. It was built at the request of King Louis XIV of France as a retreat for himself and his maîtresse-en-titre of the time, the Marquise de Montespan, and as a place where he and invited guests could take light meals (collations) away from the strict étiquette of the royal court. The Grand Trianon is set within its own park, which includes the Petit Trianon (a smaller château built in the 1760s, during the reign of King Louis XV).

  • Don't bother going there unless you want a nice walk under the trees. It is a bit of a walk. Very small and nothing much to see. They just furnished it old style gaudy furniture. They still could not fill the rooms, so they even put pool table in one of them. Statues are not old but recently made from making them in plastic molds. Paintings are some of big modern paintings, just as I said before to fill up the space. Gardens are nice, but not worth it if it is going to be a hot day. Stick to the main palace and the gardens.
  • Interesting contrast to the main palace, it puts the royals into a more human perspective. Not much furniture and decor as it was all sold off. Be aware it is a very long walk here. 8 euros gets you on the little train. 35 euros gets you a golf buggy for 4 or 5 persons.
