Stunning ceilings and frescoes, the basilica is said to be only 8 km from the center by car, but with all the roadworks going on it was quite a trial to find and ended up being much further from the..... more »

A very important church from the early period of Christianity. Back when Classe was an import port for the late Roman Empire. Should you visit, you must add the museum concerning Classe to your list. It’s just a few meters away, behind the basilica and across the tracks. Housed in an old sugar factory, it provides an explanation of the development of Ravenna, Caesera, and Classe in both Italian and English. Very helpful without being overwhelming. Actually, you may want to visit the Museum first, then the Basilica.

Location particularly remarkable in the middle of a vast archeological site and close to the ancient Post of Classe, the most relevant commercial port on the Adriatic coast since the Roman Empire. The internal decoration is simply breeathtaking. Pity that the intricate mosaic work can only be appreciated on closeups, while you can only approach them from a distance. Ensure to bring good telelens with you.
