Vicolo Privato Lavandai, Milan

#13 of 233 in Historic Sites in Milan
Historic Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Vicolo Privato Lavandai is on the banks of the Naviglio near the dockyard. Washerwomen worked at this ancient laundry service until the 1950s, cleaning the townspeople's linens in the canal. You can still see their wooden seats and cement washing slabs. You might stop for dinner next door at Ristorante El Brellin, which is in the old grocery shop that supplied the women with soaps and bleaches. The building retains the original fireplaces and wood-paneled ceilings. In this area of narrow roads and proximity to the canal, you may stumble across an interesting shop or bar.
