Battistero Neoniano (Battistero degli Ortodossi)
Battistero Neoniano (Battistero degli Ortodossi), erected partly on the site of a Roman bath, represents the most ancient monument remaining in Ravenna. The octagonal shape symbolizes the seven days of the week plus the day of resurrection. Look toward the ceiling for a mosaic of John baptizing Jesus, with the twelve apostles surrounding the pair in the outside ring. UNESCO recognized the art here as both early Christian and decidedly Greco-Roman, and thus a piece of world heritage. Avoid timing your visit with that of a tour group, as they allow in only a limited number of tourists at one time. Wonderful place, and the site where the famous Swiss psychologist Carl Jung had a strange "time travel" experience, as described in his classic book "Memories, Dreams, Reflections" .
