Built during the mid-fifth century, Mausoleo di Galla Placidia is one of the best-preserved Christian sites in Italy, as well as a World Heritage site. The mausoleum's simple exterior belies its detailed inner sanctum, which is adorned with intricate, sky-themed mosaics. The mosaic over the north entrance features a stylized, regal depiction of Jesus, a transition from classical portrayals to the medieval-style artwork seen in the following centuries.     You may be surprised how small this tomb is - but the alabaster windows, star covered ceiling and mosaics make it a very special place. Usually it takes bit long until hurried tourists have left and.....  more »

    This small but well preserved mausolean is a must see. The mosaics are from the 6th century. Look closely and you will see figures the four evangelists and the apostles and there are 507 gold...  more »

    One of the most interesting works of art of the entire world. It is not, in fact, the mausoleum of the Ostrogothic princess but, rather, it was originally a small church dedicated to Saint Lawrence - as one of the mosaics shows clearly. It is especially wonderful in the morning or late afternoon, when the oblique Sun rays hit the mosaics and make them shine.

    From the outside the tiny building is unimpressive, and you have no idea how beautiful the mosaics inside will be. Every inch of the walls and ceilings and they are wonderful. In summer, entrance is limited to 5 minutes or person, go in the low season when the monuments aren't crowded.
