Portuguese Cistern, El Jadida

#2 of 37 in Things to do in El Jadida
Architectural Building · Landmark
Portuguese Cistern draws visitors with its enchanting dance of dim lights reflected against the surface of the water. Originally built as a warehouse in 1514, this square underground chamber, which was later turned into a cistern, features double barrel vaults supported by 25 stone pillars. The cistern served as the filming location for several movies, including Orson Welles' "Othello." Today, the site hosts cultural events, such as concerts of Fado music. • The only "attraction"/site in El Jadida, and it was closed! A bit disappointed. The price seemed to be pretty disappointing too, 60 dirham seems a bit steep to be honest.  more »
  • a tinny place that we can not imagine that was made so long ago, good engineering to hold so much water 5000m3  more »
