Monumento aos Herois da Guerra Peninsular commemorates the victory of the united Portuguese and English troops against Napoleon in the Peninsular War. The lion killing the eagle on the top of the 45 m (148 ft) column symbolizes the British armies defeating the French. Take some time to explore the reliefs carved into the base of the monument and the sculptures that surround it.   • Nice park. Some trees/shade. Beautiful statue in centre. Close to beautiful and modern music hall, which has a great little café:cafeteria with salads, sandwiches and pastries.
