Cape Saint Vincent, Sagres

#1 of 86 in Historic Sites in Faro District
Lighthouse · Landmark
Behold the rugged coastal scenery from the most southwesterly point in Europe at Cape Saint Vincent. Visit the cape's 1846 lighthouse, which stands at 24 m (79 ft) and watches over one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. Listen to the waves crashing on the cliffs and keep your eyes open for the many birds that inhabit and nest in the area, such as gulls, eagles, storks, and falcons. The terrain is moderately rough, so keep this in mind if bringing children or those with limited mobility. • Easy parking. Unfortunately, the lighthouse had closed for the day. However, we were rewarded with spectacular views of the sunset - see photos.  more »
  • We got there just before they opened for the day. The views are great, but there isn't much to see as far as the lighthouse is concerned.  more »
  • It is the most southwestern point of Portugal and continental Europe. In the Middle Ages, this place was considered the end of the world known to Europeans. You must be there to see it! Centuries ago, they also looked into the same vastness.
  • It was really nice and sunny when we arrived there. Clear skies and no wind. Worth walking on the cliffs as well for some spectacular views.
