Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Largo da Oliveira and Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra). You'll visit kid-friendly attractions like Sameiro Sanctuary and Capela das Almas. Get out of town with these interesting Porto side-trips: Castelo de Montemor o Velho (in Montemor-o-Velho), Guimaraes (Citania de Briteiros & Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira) and Se de Braga (in Braga). A city of rich Moorish heritage, Seville is the cultural and financial center of southern Spain, and the site of numerous festivals throughout the year.
Get some historical perspective at Plaza de España and Royal Alcázar of Seville. Step off the beaten path and head to Museo Palacio de la Condesa de Lebrija and Real Maestranza de Caballeria de Sevilla. Next up on the itinerary: pause for some serene contemplation at Catedral de Sevilla, appreciate the extensive heritage of Plaza del Triunfo, wander the streets of Barrio Santa Cruz, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Iglesia de la Magdalena.
