Chambéry is a city in the department of Savoie, located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. It is the capital of the department and has been the historical capital of the Savoy region since the 13th century, when Amadeus V, Count of Savoy, made the city his seat of power.Together with other Alpine towns Chambéry engages in the Alpine Town of the Year Association for the implementation of the Alpine Convention to achieve sustainable development in the Alpine Arc. Change things up with these side-trips from Chambery: Lac du Bourget (in Aix-les-Bains), Station de Ski les Saisies (in Les Saisies) and Walibi Rhone-Alpes (in Les Avenieres). There's still lots to do: appreciate the history behind La Fontaine des Eléphants, contemplate the long history of Abbaye d'Hautecombe, admire the landmark architecture of Castle of the Dukes of Savoie, and get to know the fascinating history of Ville Ancienne.

To find ratings, reviews, where to stay, and other tourist information, you can read our Chambery road trip planning website .

If you are flying in from Canada, the closest major airports are Chambéry-Savoie Airport, Grenoble-Isère Airport and Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport. In May, plan for daily highs up to 23°C, and evening lows to 10°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 24th (Sun) so you can travel back home.
