Discover what it was like to travel aboard the world’s first great ocean liner, Brunel's SS Great Britain, launched in 1843 as the longest and largest vessel of its time. The ship was designed for service between Bristol and New York, and was the first iron steamer to cross the Atlantic. Today, this historic ship serves as a museum and an award-winning tourist attraction, with over 150,000 visitors every year. Stroll the decks, peep inside the luxury cabins of first-class passengers, walk through the busy kitchens, and go beneath the waterline to see the world’s oldest iron hull. Be sure to visit the Dockyard Museum to learn about the ship’s service as luxury liner, emigrant steam clipper, and sailing ship transporting coal to San Francisco. Brunel's SS Great Britain reviews
Spoke to Brunel - he was brilliant. Really enjoyed a free visit around the yard today (ship closed due to Covid). Recommend it if you are passing. See if you can ask Brunel some tricky questions... more »
We spent 2 hours on-site going around a well laid out, very informative, Covid friendly attraction. The story of the ship is fascinating and the actual ship has been beautifully restored. The... more »
What a great place - the family loved it. The museum part was very interesting with very interactive activities including lifting the ships old propeller! There is then the ship itself with various levels alto explore and some interesting smells to add to the authenticity. Finally you can go into the old dry dock and see the bottom of the vessel. All of this is wheelchair and pram accessable. One of the best attractions in Bristol.
A wonderful experience. Even on a boiling hot day, we persevered down into the dry-dock, and whilst melting, took in the wonder that is SS Great Britain. Highly recommended. As are all the experiences in and around the area. Staff are friendly and helpful. They appear to be happy in their work, and this is shown by the way they are with all the visitors. I hope that I shall return one day, as there is so much to see and do, I would like to spend more time there.....Excellent.
