See the original wooden gate of the Alamo, one of the most prized possessions, at Bullock Texas State History Museum. The permanent exhibit spreads over three floors and tells the story of Texas, from the earliest Native American communities and Spanish missions to the struggle for independence and the modern era. Through numerous artifacts and multimedia presentations, you can see how the land was shaped and cultivated, and how different cultures and ideologies blended together to form the Texan identity. The museum regularly hosts temporary exhibits that cover different aspects of Texan culture and history. If you’re visiting with kids, check for the special programs for families. This museum is awesome. We scheduled their short “Star” film for 11 and IMAX of American Journey for 2 pm, all in the same building. Together with a Noon stop at the cafe, made for a great day. The museum is beautifully laid out with artifacts galore. Lots of small films and activities in each section. We arrived about 9:30 which was perfect. Recommend start on floor one (oldest history). Progress to floor 2, finish on floor 3 (most recent events).

This is a nice museum with some interesting exhibits. They had just opened an exhibit on WWI before we visited and it was quite interesting. One thing they could improve is explaining the context for their exhibits and why they are being shown. For example, the ship hull of La Belle is quite interesting to see but we had to read all of the plaques in the surrounding area to piece together an idea of what had happened to it. Perhaps a summary plaque could be placed in front of each of the major exhibits or something. Otherwise great though! The underground parking garage was a nice convenience. We were able to leave my car there while exploring the city.
