Home to the largest collection of Polynesian cultural artifacts, Bishop Museum was founded in memory of the Charles Reed Bishop's wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last heir of the Kamehameha dynasty. Most of the original building was used as a school for indigenous boys. When the school moved, the museum expanded. In addition to the permanent collection, traveling exhibits move through the Castle Memorial building, and science exhibits are housed inside the Richard T. Mamiya Science Adventure Center. I have a 2-year old, and she LOVES it here. So many places in the Science Adventure building for her to have fun and explore; that's definitely her favorite part. But the exhibits in the Castle Memorial Bldg are always great, too! Plus, I love the stuff at the gift shop.

The rich history and culture of the Kingdom of Hawaii and it's people. Beautiful grounds with so much information. Come for the lava demonstration but stay for the three floors filled with the History of Hawaii. You might not be able to pronounce any of their names but at least you will learn about how the Hawaiian people lived and survived being in the middle of the ocean thousands of miles from other civilizations.
