Manhattan's military and maritime history museum, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum houses a large collection of craft that includes an aircraft carrier, submarine, NASA's prototype space shuttle, and a supersonic reconnaissance plane. Originally opened in 1982, the museum underwent a 22-year renovation of its facilities, reopening in 2008. You can access it by public bus or subway, and spend the day journeying through the evolution of sea, air, and space vessels. The Space Shuttle Pavilion showcases Enterprise, named after the starship from the popular "Star Trek" TV series and built to perform test flights in the atmosphere, along with artifacts, photos, audio, and films covering NASA's space shuttle program. Try your hand at flying a supersonic jet by visiting the virtual flight zone, designed with cutting-edge multi-sensory technology. Intrepid Sea Reviews
We bought the general admission as part of the C3. It doesn’t include the VR and the 4D theater. Nice exhibits, and great for families with kids. Employees are not friendly. more »
A great way for petrolheads to kill a couple of hours. When I went they had a Concorde plane to investigate and a space shuttle in addition to the other permanent exhibits. Loads of planes and... more »
I have visited this museum again after 18 years and it is still awesome. Was even more special now with my kids and they loved all the different equipments and ships. We spent a total of 4 hours in this visit, as there is so much to see. There is a small place to have hot lunch at the lower level of the carrier. There are also volunteers who are war veterans who had served in the carrier. I strongly recommend a visit, especially if you have kids.
How often do you get to walk around an aircraft carrier? Or a submarine? This museum was awesome for someone like me who is interested in military history and modelling. But it was not just about the exhibits. Veterans who are volunteers are happy to share their knowledge and experiences with you and gave the place that personal touch. There are highlights to visiting New York and it usually involves a place, but these people are just as interesting and unique. Just wonderful. 👏 👌
