In a tropical valley with its own tropical microclimate, Iao Valley attracts visitors with its spire-shaped Needle. Take a walk through the botanical garden to overlook the Needle, a 370 m (1200 ft) tall lava remnant. The valley itself was once a burial ground for rulers, and the monument was used as a sacrificial altar. One of the bloodiest battles of Hawaii also occurred at this spot. For these reasons, hiking through the area is not permitted. Instead, follow the paved paths and read the info boards.     Nice place to take a walk. Great plants and the sound of running water make this a very restful place. Good places to sit if folks are tired. Fair price to park. Lots to see. And a small history....  more »

    We came here in 2008. What a beautiful park! Can't believe more people don't know about it. Everybody talks about other, lesser sites, but this is really spectacular!

    The Iao valley is a beautiful place with important history surrounding it as it was the site of one of the most brutal conflicts in Hawaiian history. There is a swimming area in the creek many local residents converge on this location to swim. Parking was available but in order to park each car entering must pay a fee of twenty five dollars.
