Marking the entry into Prague's historical old town, Powder Tower is one of the original city gates. Constructed in 1475 and intended for ceremonial rather than defensive purposes, the tower played a major role during the coronation parades of kings of Bohemia. Royalty continued to pass through this gate on their way to coronation ceremonies until the 17th century, when the tower became a major gunpowder depository (hence the name). Restored in the middle of the 19th century by architect Josef Mocker, the tower bears statues of several Bohemian kings and symbols of territories that they controlled. For sweeping views over the old town, visit the tower's 44 m (144 ft) high gallery. Arrange to visit Powder Tower and other attractions in Prague using our Prague trip itinerary builder tool.

  • Decent tower with basic city views. You have to take 100s of steps as there is no lift. If you have been to pisa tower top (Italy) then you will find similar steps here. From top there are decent...

  • From this place in the old city you can usually walk around Prague. Better be free and visit every small streets cause many interesting you can watch. It's looks like small district but you need to have a lot of time to walk here, cause many exciting places, shops, tavernas, restaurants. So enjoy slowly, without fast. It's very historical and every building has own stories
  • This tower was unusual as compared to the buildings around it. This looks like more older and didn't had paint, which is understandable as the building is has proper stone finishing outside. I was roaming the city and found many people in sport wear. Then I followed them and came to know that the day was Czech Run, which is an event of Czech marathon. I saw many international players participating in that marathon. I was there when the race was finished. Some runners from Africa were on the top lists who finished the race. There were many local artists who were singing. I felt a sense of happiness in all the people around. The race finished at this tower. The tower was originally built as one of the main entrances of the Old city. later the tower was used to store the gun powder and got its name as The Powder Tower. I had some photographs which I am sharing with you. I don't know ho it looks from inside but from outside it looks stunning. Beautiful architecture.
