Create an itinerary including Palais de l'Ile
Palais de l'Ile is a recognizable feature of the Thiou canal that splits the water with its sharp corner and forces it apart. When you see the stalwart, gray stone it will come as no surprise that this building has been standing since 1132. It began as the residence of the Lord of Annecy, then an administrative headquarters, courthouse, a mint, and a jail until 1865 and again World War II. Nowadays, you don’t need to be arrested to visit the interior of the castle, just buy a ticket to the history museum located inside and wander through the halls and rooms that once housed both nobility and criminals. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Annecy holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Palais de l'Ile and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • You can but see the palace. It’s very visible at the beginning of the old city (entering from the lake). The building and its location is perfect. Once inside it’s not so interesting. 20 minutes...

  • This was an interesting morning exploring this place. Plenty see and you can almost imagine yourself being there back in the day. Some good photo opportunities too.

  • This city is a photographers dream. It is absolutely finominal. The town is clean, easy to walk everywhere and there are loads of restaurants to choose from. The park next to the lake is also worth visiting. A must see if you visit France.
  • Beautiful historic building that used to be a prison and now houses a museum. We found the ground floor most interesting, which was about the building and had texts in multiple languages including English. The other floors were more about the local history of Annecy, which had texts only in French. It is pretty small and we were inside for less than an hour.
