Palais des Papes is the biggest Gothic palace in all of Europe, with 15,000 sq m (50,000 sq ft) of floor space. This was the residence of the sovereign pontiffs in the 14th century, and is today one of UNESCO's world heritage sites. Visit the chapels, cloister, ceremonial halls, and the Pope's private apartments, decorated with priceless frescoes. The Musée de l'Oeuvre within the palace describes the development and history of the building. • If you are handed the square headphones exchange them immediately for the other padded version, or use you own. The sound is awful, barely audible.

  • Possibly the best burger in France? You must try and decide for yourself. My wife and son tried some of the chef specialties but frog legs, liver, and heads of animals are not my thing. The seem to have enjoyed it. Giving 5 stars for the great burger and the willingness to have a adventurous menu in a touristy city. Service were spot on! Outdoor sitting setup were wonderfully spaced out. High recommend!
  • Great self guided tour through the palace using a tablet they provide so that you can see and hear the history and how each of the rooms were used. You can get tickets in advance at the tourist office in Avignon to get in at a set time. Much easier than standing in 2 lines. Go early to beat the crowds.
