Bas-Rhin meaning "Lower Rhine" is the more populous and densely populated of the two departments in the Alsace region known for its outstanding Gothic cathedrals. The River Rhine has always been of great historical and economic importance to the area forming the eastern border of the department that is also home to some of the foothills of the Vosges. The area has a heavy German influence due to its history from 1871 - 1919 as part of the German Empire.
