Bouches-du-Rhone trip planner

Named after the mouth of the Rhône River where it meets the Mediterranean Sea, Bouches-du-Rhône is a department created during the French Revolution from the western part of the former province of Provence, with its history closely linked to Provence. The department is well-represented in French art as Paul Cézanne painted numerous representations of Mont Sainte-Victoire and Vincent van Gogh spent much of his life here, painting many scenes of the area. The largest city in the department, Marseille, contains a major industrial harbor, which today serves as France's largest commercial port.
