La Fontaine des Eléphants
The heads of four-life size elephants burst from the base of La Fontaine des Eléphants. It is a strange sight to see elephants truncating a fountain in France, but it makes sense when you see the renowned military adventurer Benoit de Boigne’s statue installed on top. Boigne made his fortune in India and the elephants commemorate this Savoy native’s feats in that exotic land. When the fountain was first erected it was nicknamed “les quatre sans culs,” or “the four without arses,” by the annoyed locals. Eventually the memorial caught on and was accepted as a city landmark, but the nickname stuck. The history behind the fountain is worth reading. As it was winter the fountain was not working, but the elephants and the column with a statue of the General are still worth seeing.
