Basilica of Notre-Dame du Port
Another of the five major basilicas of Auvergne, Basilica of Notre-Dame du Port was founded by the bishop of Clermont, Saint Avitus, during the 6th century and was rebuilt in the 11th or 12th centuries after being burned down by the Normans. It is built from arkose sandstone and the building is said to have perfect harmony resulting from the "Golden Ratio" architecture. You can attend mass on Sunday and some weekdays and view some of the finest capitals in Auvergne that depict scenes from the Bible and Psychomachia of Prudentius. The basilica is very sober inside and there is also a crypt with the Virgin Mary. It is listed on the World Heritage of Unesco and well worth the visit.

We went in July when they organize guided visits. We have received an excellent one hour explanation about the architecture and the church decorations. It was very well documented and clearly explained.

A beautiful romanesque basilica with typical chevets and mosaics, among the five greatest churches in Auvergne (Issoire, Orcival, Saint-Nectaire, and Saint-Saturnin). Founded in the 6th century, burned down and rebuilt around the 12th, the building has been restored (questionably) in the 19th century, finally a major restoration programme took place in the church interior at the beginning of the 21st century (to clean the stonework and remove the 19th century cement adds) after the basilica was added to the UNESCO World Heritage (1998).
