The medieval Gothic cathedral, Cathedrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, was built in the 13th century entirely from black lava stone making it highly distinctive and visible from great distances. A step inside reveals beautiful medieval stained glass windows, many Gothic frescoes, and a crypt from the 10th century with two remarkable sarcophagi from the 4th and 5th centuries. Striking architectural features, include its 96.2 m (315 ft) tall twin spires and the blue rose and the orange stained glass windows made in the 14th century above the ambulatory chapels. Black volcanic stone standing for centuries, you must hand it to the French for dedication and craftsmanship. Very powerful Holy Place where you can sit be still and pray.
