Chateaux de Lastours, Lastours

Chateaux de Lastours are four related castles on a rocky spur overlooking a village and surrounding valleys and rivers. The French Ministry of Culture listed this as a historic monument, and archaeological digs are still being conducted here. Cabaret castle is the primary citadel of the group. You can view a polygonal keep, a tower, ramparts with a round walk, and a crenellated wall constructed with irregular material. Tour Régine is the smallest of the fortresses, and you'll notice that its curtain wall has collapsed. This three-story tower flanked by a spiral staircase was built primarily with white limestone. Surdespine is the least-preserved of the four castles. It features a square tower, rectangular curtain wall, semicircular arched windows, and defensive "murder holes."
