Create an itinerary including Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg
Fancy a wander through a thirteenth century castle overlooking the Alsatian plain? Beautiful Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg is located in Orschwiller, Alsace amidst the sprawling Vosges Mountains just west of Sélestat. Due to the castle’s strategic locale, the castle was well used by successive powers from the Middle Ages on. Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg was passed down from the Hohenstaufen family to the Dukes of Lorraine, who in turn entrusted it to the Ratsamhausen family (knights from Middle Alsace), who then held the castle until the fifteenth century. It’s believed that in the midst of the Thirty Years War, the castle was abandoned. From 1900 to 1908, it underwent an intense restoration phase under the watchful eye of Emperor Wilhelm II. Today, the castle is a highlight in the region, and if you’ve signed yourself up for an Alsace wine tour, Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg is a popular stop. Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , international travel planner Edition.

  • I arrived from Basel by train to Selestat. From here I took the 500 bus, which takes about 30 minutes to the castle. The castle is very nicely renovated and the visiting route is very well made...

  • This castle has been nicely renovated (some work is ongoing). It's worth a visit for the castle and for the views. Parking is roadside.

  • This is a medieval castle which has a unique history where the ownership has changed between Germany and France. You get to see a lot of rooms on your visit and spectacular scenery of the surrounding hills. Prepare to climb lots of steps. I liked seeing the stained glass windows. There's information cards in each of the rooms. Unfortunately there were no audio guides left on the day we visited, which was a bank holiday weekend. I would advise to get there early because the parking is on street and limited. You might end up walking far to reach the castle. But it's certainly worth a visit.
  • This is very well preserved place. I spent around 2 hours, many sitting areas for quick rest in between rooms/ stops. Many beautiful place for photo taking, or just enjoy the architecture of the building. Free parking is available at roadside; toilet is clean and available near entrance.
