MAISON D'AMPERE Musee de l'electricite, Poleymieux-au-Mont-d'Or

It is an amazing place! The personal is English speaking and you can take with you audio in English. There are many interactive elements and even if you are not in electricity field, you can enjoy being at the museum and learn many facts. Many exhibition halls and lots of interesting stuff. Believe me, you must see it!

Addressing a couple previous comments: "Biggest point of improvement is that not everything was translated to English." I agree, but there is a solution. Google translate, offline languages, works great. Just point your phone at the French descriptions and you'll get a passable translation. Invaluable, very much improved experience. "The old and romantic-looking experiment Ampere conducted are fascinating but not very accessible to young or less technically-minded visitors." I agree with this also, but there is a positive side to this. As an electrical engineer (and for other technical people), I found them to be TREMENDOUS. Fabulous to see exhibits that are not overly simplified. I was blown away by this museum. I didn't think there would be nearly as much stuff inside as there was. I figured there would be some stuff about Ampere's work and not much else. The house is also deceivingly large inside, much larger than it initially appeared to be from the outside. The museum had not just the old experiment displays, but so much general electrical history and old equipment in general Again, I'm an electrical engineer so maybe I was predisposed to love this museum. But it wildly exceeded my expectations. If I'm in Lyon again, I'd happily pay to go back.
