Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis
Discover the very first masterpiece of monumental Gothic art at Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis. For a fascinating look at a royal necropolis, you can peruse the rare collection, featuring 70 carved tombs and recumbent statues from the 12th century, the only complete set of its kind in Europe. Twelfth- and 19th-century stained-glass panels cast multicolored rays on the statues. This was a pilgrimage site, a coronation site for many queens, and the burial site of many nobles and royals, including all but three of France's kings. Put Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis and other Saint-Denis attractions into our Saint-Denis trip planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

It is one of the great historical place in Paris. Inside the church contains with many kings and queens of France such Louis XIV, Marie Antoinette and Catherine de Medici. And it’s stunning with stained glasses.

Close to the end of the Ligne 13 metro, this famous historical monument of France is easy to get to also by Train H and RER D (10min from Gare du Nord) and then a further 16min walk. Most of the tombs and sculptures are in the church with a few in the crypt below. There is minimal labels and only in French. Would suggest pre-researching or getting the audio guide (in English or french). It’s not easy to see some of the tombs but most are closely accessible. Parents be advised to keep kids on a short leash to avoid touching (attendants are monitoring). Stained glass windows are beautiful. Worth bringing some binoculars. No explanations available about the windows.
