Gros Ouvrage Maginot du Hackenberg, Veckring

Gros Ouvrage Maginot du Hackenberg is among the largest of the Maginot Line fortifications in Thionville. The fort was considered as a showpiece of French fortification technology back then and was even visited by the British King George VI. The fort used to provide covering fire to harass German forces and neighboring states. Today Hackenberg operates as a museum. The site is made of about 17 combat blocks and 18 artillery pieces covering a large area. There are a few galleries spread across the site that house the museum pieces. One of the blocks is open to the public and displays the working of a turret to its visitors. There is also an electric train that visitors can use for touring the site.
