A 19th-century palace, Schloss Hohenschwangau served as the childhood home of King Ludwig II. The castle was built on the site of a ruined fortress and quickly became a favorite hunting residence for the royal family. The interior of the palace contains numerous grand halls. They've largely been left in the state the royals would have enjoyed, with ornate period furniture and lavish wall murals. Many sections of the castle are open to visitors, but you need to make prior arrangements for a guided tour. You can arrive for your tour in royal style: A horse carriage starts at the ticket office in the village below the palace. Check online for tour options. The poorer relation of the 2 castles in Schwangau, but definitely not to be missed. This was build by Ludwig’s father, great views of Neuschwanstein. Interior is finished unlike Neuschwanstein.

A romantic climb to a romantic sight. It's so green around here together with the Alpsee. The lake is so serene and clean. Without a ticket, one can go to the courtyard, visit and take pictures. I'm not sure if I was only fortunate or not. I was told initially that I will need a ticket. The castle is well maintained and lovely in close up view.

We enjoyed the horse drawn ride to the castle viewing point. The castle is well maintained and just as beautiful as the fairytale photo imagines presented. The bus ride was also nice, seeing the castle from another angle. We enjoyed the restaurant in the quaint village parking area.
