Pinakothek der Moderne houses four separate museums of modern art in over 22,000 sq m (5.4 acres). One museum displays items from the permanent collection of over 3,000 pieces of art from a range of genres. Another focuses on works on paper, with drawing and prints from the 15th century up to today. The architecture museum holds the largest collection of architectural drawings in Germany. At the International Design Museum Munich, see a selection of its 80,000 industrial design, graphic design, and arts and crafts holdings. Try to remember the route you take through the gallery rooms, as some visitors find the building a bit of a labyrinth. While I thought the entrance fee of 10€ was fair (or at least the norm here), at least 5 rooms were being rearranged and visitors could not enter to see those rooms. Why is anyone paying full price if a signifixant portion of the museum is off limits? I also had to check in my backpack. But as a tourist I would like my valuables to be with me at all times, so I had a very tiny tote that could fit only my wallet and a thin scarf. One guard told me that was okay as long as I didn't carry water. Subsequently I got some stares from the other guards, which was annoying, but no one else stopped me until I got to the last exhibit before the gift shop. The guard would not let me in at all despite me trying my best to explain that someone else told me it was fine. Besides, what am I gonna do with a small tote bag? The guard could not (or would not) understand my English. Since it was the last exhibit and the day was coming to an end, I didn't bother. All I have to say is that this is the worst museum experience I've had in Germany. This place could do a lot more to be friendly to tourists, otherwise just it should just market itself only to locals and German speakers.

After checking in our backpacks at the coat check, we proceeded to head up stairs to the exhibit. But we were stopped immediately by a guard who told us "No, you can't enter! " Turns out, my wife's tiny purse had 2 straps. Apparently, you can't bring backpacks into the museum. Clearly, this was not a backpack, not even close. Completely obvious, a ridiculous assertion. We pointed out the numerous individuals going up with much bigger bags. But "No! Two straps! That's the rule. Of course, we had already asked with the coat check but who informed us that purses were ok. I guess he didn't know the 2 strap rule. Or maybe he had an iota of common sense. We had to argue with 3 different staff members before talking to someone who saw the absurdity of this and allowed us entry. Finally to the art. This was one of the worst modern art museums I've ever been to. And I've been to many (being an artist). More about design than modern or contemporary art. And, once again, as is the norm in Munich, almost no one spoke English. In a museum?!?
