Create an itinerary including Museum of Prehistoric Thira
Featuring artifacts uncovered on the island, Museum of Prehistoric Thira represents Thira's prehistoric centuries with artifacts excavated from nearby Akrotiri and Potamos. Items are divided into four units representing: the history of research, Thira’s geology, the history of the island between the late Neolithic to late Cycladic Period I, and the city’s peak at Akrotiri. Examine pottery and marble figurines that are thousands of years old, and see the changes in pottery as Thira progressed through the centuries. The artifacts from Thira’s heyday paint a picture of how Therans lived in the 17th century BCE. • An spectacular archaeological collection - particularly of Minoan pottery, figurines, and (most especially) frescoes. The museum could do with a bit better signposting - you can very easily miss the spectacular fresco collection in the basement as there seem to be absolutely no signs telling you there's anything downstairs. And this would be a tragedy as the fresco exhibition is very well done with an attempt to arrange the frescoes as they were situated in context so you can appreciate how they functioned as wall decorations.
  • Small, but packed with finds from the excavation of Akrotiri. Beautiful pottery and amazing frescoes from so long ago it boggles the mind it’s still visible. Make sure to go downstairs where you can see larger fresco panels.
