Create an itinerary including Ancient Thera
High above Kamari, you can explore the ruins of Ancient Thera. The former city was inhabited from ninth century BC to 726 AD. Hike up the 360 m (1,180 ft) hill, Mesa Vouna, to reach the ruins, or rent a scooter or car to get to the top. The ruins from the Hellenistic era include remnants from the Roman and Byzantine eras. Walk the short main street to glimpse what's left of two agoras (gathering places), several Greek temples, shops, Roman baths, Byzantine walls, and a church. Then look out over the towns and the coast of Santorini below. Put Ancient Thera and other Kamari attractions into our Kamari online driving holiday planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • Hiked to the top of the mountain to find the exhibit was closed (every Wednesday). It was a great hike, nonetheless.

  • Awesome trip back in time. Ancient Thera is a well preserved city. I learned about how the city transitioned from Ancient Greek, Egyptian and Roman and enjoyed the view from up high. Be warned though....  more

  • The road up there is almost worth it on its own, but walking along ancient ruins atop a mountain, and experiencing how big the place once was, simply breathtaking. Tips for a good experience: - good shoes (some light hiking to get up there). - Clothes that can handle wind and sand (a lot of Marilyn Monroe moments up there) and some discoloration by sandblasting on some of our clothes. -Some water and/or face mask for comfort (sand gets in your throat and its hot)
  • Worth going to see this ancient site while in Santorini. It's bigger than expected, very high up and it's so windy up there so hold on to your belongings. We took a minibus up but some people walked up or went by car, moped or quad. It doesn't take long to get around the Ancient City about 1.5hrs is plenty of time
