Create an itinerary including Santorini Volcano
The cause of one of the largest and most destructive eruptions in recorded history, Santorini Volcano represents an active volcano with a crater rising out of the sea. The volcano violently erupted in 1627 BCE, destroying the island's thriving Minoan settlement. Although no clear records remain of this event, the eruption appears to have inspired many Greek myths and produced a short-term climatic change that caused heavy rainstorms as far away as Egypt. Today, all of Santorini serves as a kind of volcanological museum, offering you a chance to observe a range of geological features. To appreciate the volcano in its full glory, take a boat tour around the island. Put Santorini Volcano on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Fira trip itinerary website.

  • I loved exploring the Santorini Volcano. It was my first time at a volcano and didn't really know what to expect. But it's a little otherworldly, almost like being on Mars. It's pretty cool to see...

  • Definitely recommend. The view from the top is amazing and the volcano is considered active even though it last erupted in 1950. Also, its safe and don't let the term volcano scare you. There are enough sensors to know about eruption 3 months before it happens. Make sure you have good trekking or sports shoes as it's quite a rocky path.
  • Great to say I've been to the top of an active volcano smelled the sulphur and seen it smoking. But it is 125M from sea level and that's where you start. I would not recommend sandals or flip-flops
