Statue of St Stephen represents the first king of Hungary seated on a destrier, wearing the Hungarian crown and the coronation mantle. King Stephen I united the Magyar tribes and established Christianity in the country at the beginning of the 11th century. The bronze equestrian statue from 1906 stands on a high stone pedestal, which is adorned with reliefs illustrating scenes from the king's life. Notice the ornate saddlecloth and four figures of lions guarding the king. The area around the statue offers impressive views of Pest on the other side of the river. • This tasteful statue of St. Stephen was erected in 1906 and stands facing Mathias church, signifying that, as king, Stephen accepted the authority of the church.

  • The statue of Stephen I, also known as King Saint Stephen who was the first King of Hungary from 1000 or 1001, until his death in 1038 riding on a horse is a must see while visiting Budapest. Stephen was the first member of his family to become a devout Christian. He was crowned on 25 December 1000 or 1 January 1001 with a crown sent by Pope Sylvester II. This magnificent statue by the Matthew Church deserves a visit to admire its elaborate details. The view of the City of Budapest and the Danube River from the surrounding of the statue is fantastic.
  • Great statue of the first King of Hungary mounted on a horse, ruling around 1000-1038 AD. The pedestal is futures episodes of King's life. It is a great spot for overview of Matthias Church as welk as panoramic view of Budapest, especially at night.
