Explore the streets of Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou, a traditional clay city now protected as a World Heritage Site. Dating back to the 11th century, the collection of six forts (known as kasbahs) and around fifty individual homes sit huddled behind fortified walls on what was once the caravan route connecting Sahara and Marrakech. Used in many films over the years, usually as a stand-in for Jerusalem, the city has an evocative, timeless charm. Using our custom trip planner, Ait Ben Haddou attractions like Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

They say it is very old, but frankly it looks like many other villages up north (on a way to Anmiter). It is probably the best place to buy a local art as there are loads of it. On the other hand, the other villages were much more authentic thanks to the fact, that there were almost no tourists. Anyway, it is a nice and very photogenic place, plus good place to get a souvenir. I bought there a small painting made with colours from indigo, tea and turmeric and the artist made it in front of me, cool, isn't it? :-)

An impressive fortress standing tall in the desert! A favored location among filmmakers, it has all the feelings of one being in an epic location in the Moroccan Sahara. I'd avoid peak daylight hours as the heat could get unbearable. Late afternoon to sunset presents a nice opportunity to ascend to the top of the fortress for the 360 panoramic views. Along the way, you may spot cats and local shop vendors. The climb isn't bad with gradual ascent; takes about 20-30 mins from the base as you're stopping for the views. Sunrise is another beautiful time to view the fortress but from afar. FYI, this is a good location to buy that signature indigo Moroccan scarf you've been thinking about! If you do, make sure you select the original cotton blue one that's priced slightly higher than the others. The cheaper ones will start leaking color even with sweat. Always bargain (cash only). Camera and tripods are no problem.
