Discover the historical heart of the city at Medina of Fez, the oldest neighborhood in Fez, protected as a World Heritage Site. Founded as the capital of the kingdom by the Idrisid dynasty in the 8th century CE, the walled part of town includes a wealth of historical monuments and buildings flanking narrow, winding, bustling streets. Head to area's souks to haggle for traditional clothing, spices, and ornaments, or take in scenes of everyday life from the comfort of a local cafe. So authentic, love how people actually live there. You see kids going to school. Mesmerizing artisan works. Vendors speak several languages.

Medina is really unique. It’s easy to get lost there so I recommend following just main streets. Sometimes especially when it’s really hot there is a bad smell coming from leather factories. Don’t recommend getting guide from the street, just ask about one in your riad/hostel.

This medina is ancient and the people are also still living in the 9th century which is quite sad. The people here are pathetic and only know how to harass the tourists. Disgusting place. So many idiotic young men following us and trying to point us in the wrong direction. And everyone else just watching them and not intervening which is even more sad. Don't walk into this place alone at night, anything can happen to you. Especially to women. I had my husband with me, and it was still extremely scary. The police are helpful and try to keep it safe but if one of these youths attack you, the medina is confusing with little alleys, the police will not reach you on time.
