Venture out into the waves of sand at Merzouga Desert, one of the country's two Saharan ergs, or dunes created by the wind. The 50 km (31 mi) long and 5 km (3.1 mi) wide dunes can rise 350 m (1,148 ft) in places, with the undulating, barren landscape appearing like a moving golden sea. Berber camel caravans traipsing through the sand add to the iconic Saharan scenery. Many visitors arrange a Berber-led excursion into the desert, with an initial camel trek, followed by a night of traditional food and entertainment under the stars.
