Fueled by the rise of Portugal's seafaring empire, Jardim Botanico features a wealth of plant species from exotic reaches of the globe. Pay a visit to the garden, operated by the University of Coimbra, and explore the 13 hectares (32 acres) of green space via its network of pathways, trails, and courtyards. You'll pass through different themed areas ranging from ordinary woods to the lime grove, tropical section, greenhouses, and more. Admire the riotous array of flora that began to arrive in Portugal from distant lands during overseas exploration in the 15th century, culminating in the garden's foundation in 1772. You can take a guided tour to learn more about the history and varieties of plants in the garden, but you must make arrangements in advance. Our Coimbra trip planning tool makes visiting Jardim Botanico and other Coimbra attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

We visited this garden as the sun was setting. We only spent about 30 min. But it was wonderful. The fountains, ponds, trees, and sounds of nature. My favorite part was the bamboo pathway!

After visiting the University, we strolled through the botanical garden. It is in need of some repair, however it remains beautiful and impressive with its fountains and ponds. Has hints of royal...

One of the best places in Coimbra! The park is fantastic, it's very calm and big. You can see trees and plants from all around the world, you can sit and read or relax! It has more than one entrance, it has a free bathroom and a greenhouse with tropical plants (however it's expensive, 12 euros). Overall a fantastic park and a must if you are in Coimbra! (It opens at 9 a.m )

Nice way to walk down after the university instead of through town. Some big beautiful trees and the bamboo forest was very nice. Nothing amazing as botanical gardens go. You need a reservation to go into the greenhouse of tropical plants, but can see them from outside. We were a couple of weeks shy of all the blooming trees and flowers, bit some were just starting to bloom.
