Chiado, Lisbon

Shop at traditional and modern establishments in Chiado, the popular neighborhood that has existed since Roman times. Chiado Square and its surrounding area make up this district and are known for their lively shopping streets, especially the popular Carmo and Garrett streets. As you explore the square, look for Costa Mota's bronze statue of poet Antonio Ribeiro. Spend time at one of the neighborhood's lovely cafes; some are known for famous customers, including poet Fernando Pessoa. While the area was greatly affected by a fire in 1988, most of its buildings have been restored in an ongoing restoration project.
