Sao Bento Railway Station, Porto

Considered one of the most picturesque train stations in Europe, Sao Bento Railway Station showcases a tile exhibit of the history of Portugal. Circle the station for views of its spectacular exterior, then find your way to its vestibule to see the famous tile panels. Azulejo painter Jorge Colaco created these panels to represent important historical events in Portugal, as well as landscapes and ethnographic scenes. Architect José Marques da Silva built the railway station in a French Beaux-Arts style under King Carlos I in the early 20th century. The site was inaugurated in 1916, though it is named for a 16th century Benedictine monastery built on the same site.
