Create an itinerary including National Palace of Queluz
Admire the extravagant royal collection and gardens of National Palace of Queluz, originally built as a summer residence for the royal family of Portugal. Construction began in 1747 at the request of the future King Pedro III, who would later serve as the consort of Queen Maria I. It became a favorite of Portuguese royalty, who resided here permanently from 1794 until 1807, when they fled to Brazil during the French invasion. Walk inside to view the mix of Baroque, Rococo, and neoclassical styles that reflect the Court's evolving tastes. Browse the opulent collection of paintings, carpets, furniture, ceramics, and porcelains, and then wander through the gardens scattered with statues, fountains, and areas to relax. On certain days there are demonstrations of falconry and traditional 18th century court riding, so check the website for scheduling. • This is a gem of a place. When we visited we were struck by how few visitors there were, as if people didn’t know about this palace and its history. There is some serious renovation going on , but...

  • If you’re visiting Lisbon in Portugal, the Palace in the small town of Queluz is worth a visit. The palace boasts beautiful kept rooms, a tremendous ballroom, and the best part of all, beautifully kept gardens. It’s like a scene out of a movie! Plenty of room for crowds, even though their were none on the day we went. Great way to learn about one of Portugal’s monarchy’s and it’s history. Audio guides are available for your mobile also in various languages!
  • Really interesting palace whose restoration was funded by the very friendly people of Portugal. This is a nice peak into Portugal’s past when it was a world super power. The palace is small by European standards, but that is nice because it is very walkable. Excellent examples of the styles of the time (heavy French influence). The grounds and gardens are gorgeous and well maintained. You can enjoy a fairly thorough tour in about two hours. Restaurants and bars are nearby.
