Surrounded by imposing cliffs, Praia do Beliche is one of the region's most popular beaches for surfing, thanks to its consistent waves. Even if you don't want to surf, you can enjoy the beach by lounging in the sun or exploring the nearby fortress built in the 15th century. Though conditions around the beach are generally rough, the 40 m (131 ft) high cliffs protect it a great deal from wind. Keep in mind that the large waves mean the water is best suited to experienced surfers only. Note that the beach is accessible only via a steep set of stairs down the cliffs.
