Surprisingly, builders broke ground on Castillo Colomares in 1987 and finished in 1994. Rather than a castle of antiquity, it is an homage to Christopher Columbus’ discovery of the New World, and at 1,500 sq m (16,000 sq ft), the largest such monument. Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, and Mudéjar styles combine with Christian, Jewish, and Muslim influences in the architecture. Inside, explore educational exhibits about the discovery. Take a bus or taxi from the train station, as the steep walk up can be strenuous. • We had been to Benalmadena before but never knew this existed,so decided to visit before going on to Mijas. It was a trek down to it (we went by bus)but well worth the visit. You wouldn't think it...

  • A very wacky castle come monument. Our grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed being able to climb the steps to the various towers. Very reasonable admission charge. It's also quite a distance downhill from the village so if you have parked in the village and have little ones or those with walking difficulties I suggest driving down and using the small carpark adjacent to the monument
  • Opens at 10am, 3 euro entry, it's well worth it! Spectacular Monument. It gets very busy, be good if they could restrict the number of people they allow in at one time as its very difficult to get photos and see around due to the crowds but 100% recommend going to see it.
