Catedral Primada, Toledo

The centerpiece of the city and one of only three High Gothic cathedrals in the country, Catedral Primada was constructed using white limestone brought here from numerous quarries in the surrounding area. For many visitors, the highlight is the sacristy, with its impressive gallery packed with paintings by El Greco, Caravaggio, Titian, Rafael, Zurbarán, and Velázquez. Begun in 1226 on the site of an ancient mosque, the imposing building was modeled after the Bourges Cathedral in France. Its monumental interior features heavy columns dividing the space into five naves, with several side chapels containing exquisite gold reliefs, huge oil paintings, and portraits of cardinals going back at least 500 years. Photography is strictly forbidden inside, though you can access the bell tower to snap a few shots of the historic city center.
